It didn’t take long, but I totally drank the crossfit Kool-Aid after I went to my first class back in the beginning of April. D had started in September and everyday talked and talked…. and talked about crossfit. I originally said, nope not for me that is way to intense, but after a few months I considered giving it a try. To be honest it took be until April to have the guts to even try, but I am so happy I did! After my first class I couldn’t walk (properly) for the next 4 days, but I was excited to return later that week!
In my very first class I realized that I was a lot stronger than I had every thought and I remembered what it was like workout in a competitive environment. Growing up I played various sports and even at the varsity level, so it felt great to be back in an environment that pushed me to do better and sparked my competitive spirit. It took one class to be hooked and it took about a week to realize this was a sport for me. Fast forward 4 months and I was still going strong and loving the improvements I was making. D had already begun testing his talents at competitions, but I felt it was much to early in the game for me. Until, D needed a last-minute partner at a competition in Oakville. I have no idea how he convinced me to do it, I guess it was the sad puppy dog eyes, but with one days notice he convinced me to be his partner at a competition where some of the movements I didn’t even know how to do!
After a quick stop at my crossfit box to practice, I mean learn how to do a rope climb, I decided I was ready to give it my best shot. I was super nervous, but I had that same feeling in my stomach that I used to get right before every volleyball game I have ever played, so I knew I was going to love it. The competition was composed of 4 WODs (work out of the day):
- WOD 1: 1 km on the spin bike
- WOD 2: 800 m farmers carry run and as many push ups until time cap runs out (8 minute time cap)
- WOD 2.2: No one finished the farmers carry, so we did 2 minutes as many push ups as your team could do (alternating partners 5 push ups each)
- WOD 3: 5 calorie row and clean & jerks max lift (7 minute time cap)
- WOD 4: 35 wall balls, 1 8 foot rope climb, 25 wall balls, 1 8 foot rope climb, 15 wall balls, 1 8 foot rope climb (5 minute time cap)
D and I finished…dead last, but I did get 1 rope climb in which is what I was most worried about! All in all it was a fantastic time and I cannot wait to do it again, however I do plan on training a bit more first!! I am now 5 months in to my crossfit obsession and there is no turning back now!! Next stop visiting Spain Crossfit boxes on our honeymoon! Watch out!!
